Surgical Instructions

At NY Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon, P. C. we take great pride in our thoroughness. We will go over detailed pre- and post-operative instructions with you at the time of your appointment, and we will review these instructions with you before you leave the office after your surgery. Please remember that we are always available to answer your questions, so never hesitate to call, no matter how minor you think your question may be.

Pre-Operative Instructions

If you will be receiving IV sedation or general anesthesia for your surgery:

  1. Wear a loose-fitting shirt or blouse with short sleeves that can be rolled up. This will make it easier for us to take your blood pressure before, during, and after surgery.
  2. Do not eat or drink anything for 6 hours before your surgery.
  3. You must have a responsible adult who can accompany you home on the day of your surgery. This person will need to wait for you during your surgery and take you home afterward.
  4. Continue to take your regular prescription medications prior to your surgery unless instructed otherwise by our office. These medications may be taken with a small sip of water the morning of your surgery.

Post-Operative Instructions

  1. BLEEDING: Do not rinse your mouth or spit the day of surgery. A certain amount of bleeding is expected and the saliva may be blood tinged for 24-48 hours. If the bleeding is heavy, or persists, it can be controlled by placing a piece of gauze or a moist teabag wrapped in gauze over the wound and biting on it for 45 minutes. Repeat as needed. It is important that the gauze be placed directly over the surgical site. Do not eat, drink or sleep with gauze in your mouth. No heavy lifting or bending as this may cause bleeding.
  2. MEDICATIONS: Take all medications as directed. Patients taking medication to relieve pain or other drugs that may retard reflexes should not operate machinery, cars, etc. Antibiotics should be taken as directed until the prescription is finished.
  3. SWELLING: Apply an ice pack to the face in the area of the surgery for 15 minutes on and 15 minutes off for the first 12-14 hours. Swelling is expected after surgery. It is usually maximal in about 24-48 hours, and may last several days thereafter. Discoloration of the skin on the face and neck may occur within 10 days following surgery. It will go away.
  4. MOUTH RINSE: Do not rinse or spit until the day after surgery. At this time, use ½ teaspoon of table salt in a full (10-12 oz) glass of warm water and rinse gently, at least four (4) times per day after eating. Do not use commercial mouthwash or hydrogen peroxide.
  5. DIET: Eat soft foods only. No hot, spicy, hard, acidic or crunchy foods. No nuts or seeds. Only drink cold to warm liquids. No caffeine or alcohol for 24 hours. Do not use a straw. Do not smoke for the first 24 hours after surgery.
  6. ORAL HYGIENE: Continued proper oral hygiene is imperative. Normal brushing should be maintained, but the surgical area should be excluded for three (3) days. After three (3) days, brush the surgery site gently.
  7. UPPER JAW SURGERY: As directed by the doctor, if you had surgery near the sinus (back of the top jaw) do not blow your nose. Wipe if necessary. If you sneeze, keep your mouth and nose open and do not pinch off your nostrils. You may have some blood coming from the nostril. There is no cause for alarm. Just wipe it away. Keep your nose clear with nasal spray, drops, or oral tablets (as prescribed).
  8. IN CASE OF EMERGENCY: Call this office promptly. DO NOT page the doctor about an appointment change or billing question.

Note: If you have Restricted Caller-ID, and your phone does not accept private phone numbers, you must temporarily disable that feature by dialing *87 after paging the doctor or he will not be able to return your call.

We will provide you with a post-operative kit including:

  • Post-operative instructions
  • Extra gauze
  • An ice pack
  • Lip balm
  • Prescriptions if needed
