Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons are the surgical specialists of the dental profession. Their surgical expertise and thorough understanding of both aesthetics and function uniquely qualify them to diagnose, treat and manage the conditions, defects, injuries, and the aesthetic aspects of the mouth, teeth, jaws and face.
After four years of dental school, Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons complete four or more years of hospital-based surgical residency training. This intensive residency includes rotations through related medical fields including, internal medicine, general surgery, otolaryngology, plastic surgery, emergency medicine and anesthesiology.
The ability to provide patients with safe, effective outpatient anesthesia has distinguished the specialty of oral and maxillofacial surgery. As an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon, Dr. Schwartz is well trained in all aspects of anesthesia administration.
Board certification represents a commitment and dedication beyond an already lengthy and demanding surgical residency training.
It can easily take several years following completion of the residency program to have the clinical experience and documentation just to qualify to apply to take the board examination. The American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery’s Credentials Committee reviews the applications, and if accepted, the applicant is eligible to take a comprehensive written examination covering the entire specialty of oral and maxillofacial surgery. If a candidate passes the written examination they are permitted to go to the next step, which is a very rigorous oral certification examination. Once the surgeon passes the oral exam he/she is now certified as a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
Dr. Schwartz is a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. He is constantly attending specialty continuation education courses to advance his knowledge and abilities, in addition to lecturing at many continuing education seminars himself.
